Claucherty Stuns Schaffer, Shuryan at Berlin

Justin Claucherty became the first multi-race winner of the 2008 season this past Saturday night at Berlin Raceway. With thunder and lightning on the horizon, Claucherty and his Silverado stormed to the front and stayed just ahead of the F-150s of Paul Schaffer and Joey Shuryan in second and third. Claucherty's win put an end to Schaffer's two race win streak at the famous West Michigan speedplant and gave Justin a single point lead in the driver's points over Shuryan.

Renegade Race Fuels Fast Qualifier of the night was Paul Schaffer followed by fellow Ford pilot, Joey Shuryan. Keith Wioncek slotted his Dodge Ram pickup into the third qualifying spot. Heat race action was scrapped due to the imminent threat of thunderstorms moving toward the area.

Taking the green flag for the main event, it was John Smalley jumping out early over pole sitter Josh Leo to take the lead. Smalley held a strong lead until his right rear tire began to fade and he fell into the clutches of the pack. Leo held onto his second position but was forced to the outside by a charging Dave Parisian. Parisian looked good in second until Claucherty began to pressure his tailgate and looking to the inside line for a way through.

As Smalley's troubles up front mounted, he fell into the grasps of Claucherty who had just dispatched Parisian to third. As Claucherty worked Smalley for the lead it was Shuryan and Schaffer looking to follow the new points leader through. The three eventually worked clear of the traffic and set sail out front for the finish.

Shuryan and Schaffer were battling hard for the second spot with Schaffer looking like he may have the truck to beat. Claucherty ran consistent laps square in the racing line out front and withstood challenges from Shuryan who himself was fending off challenges from Schaffer. The three trucks alternated fast laps of the race until a late race caution for the expired engine of Josh Leo slowed the action. With the blown motor, Leo received the St. Clair Engine hard luck award.

On the restart it was Claucherty followed by Shuryan, then Schaffer. The lead trio worked hard and separated themselves from Smalley in fourth and now Wioncek in fifth. As the lead three ran nose to tail, it was Wioncek putting the bumper to the fading Smalley and moving into fourth coming off of turn two.

The excitement was not over up front though as Shuryan made one last ditch effort to rattle Claucherty on the way to the checkers. Off of turn four for the last time Shuryan barely nosed inside the tailgate of Claucherty and stood on the gas. The grip had deteriorated off the last corner and Shuryan power slid sideways at the exit. As he fought to regain control, Claucherty drove off to the win and Shuryan's tail clipped the outside retaining wall. At the finish it was Schaffer sneaking by into second only inches ahead of the sliding nose of Shuryan. With his last second pass, Schaffer earned the Allstar Performance Hard Charger of the Race award.

Wioncek was gaining on the leaders but ran out of laps to finish fourth while Smalley salvaged a fifth ahead of Hall Electronics Rookie of the Race Dave Parisian in sixth. Johnny Bruno came home a career best seventh and picked up the Engine Pro Lucky Dog award in the process followed by series newcomer Tom Sliwa in eighth.
