Dixie Sees Shuryan Take Trucks
Birch Run, MI (May 26th, 2006)

Two time defending Series Champion, Joey Shuryan came to Dixie Motor Speedway with the goal of extending his win streak to three in a row in the 2006 ShortTrackTrucks.com Challenge Series season. Shuryan accomplished his goal plus some as he also took the pole, heat race win, and all available bonus points for the night. The night also marked the return of Keith Wioncek to the trophy podium by virtue of a second place finish. Kyle "Flipper" Trinklein, the top finishing Zander Radio Systems Rookie of the Year contender, scored his best ever finish by placing third.

Qualifying action was very close as Shuryan bested Wioncek for the Turbo Blue Racing Gasolines Pole Award. Rod Morrison made it a three way battle claiming the third qualifying spot within a tenth of a second of the top two.

With rain clouds bypassing the speedway, heat race action kicked off with Shuryan taking the checkers over Wioncek and Natascha Thompson in heat number one. The second heat saw Doug Vander Vliet claim the checkers over Jim Idem and Dan Lenters.

In front of a packed Dixie Motor Speedway grandstands, the trucks took the green for the main event with Kyle Trinklein and Dan Lenters showing the way out front. The two young drivers put on a show for the fans as the veterans fought to keep up. The fight for third through seventh was intense as Schaffer, Idema, Thompson, Vander Vliet, and Morrison were all side-by-side for the first ten laps. Truck veterans Wioncek and Shuryan rode patiently letting the pack sort itself out.

The pack, however, had a major incident when Schaffer and Idema made contact exiting turn two. The two had raced sided by side into one but couldn't find a way through two without the contact which sent Idema spinning. Natascha Thompson had nowhere to go and spun sideways trying to avoid Idema. Hapless Rod Morrison was hit from behind while slowing down and was sent careening into Thompson. Both Morrison and Thompson were unable to continue.

On the restart it was Trinklein leading the way over Lenters, Schaffer, Vander Vliet, Shuryan, and Wioncek. At this point, the veteran pair of Shuryan and Wioncek began to work their way forward. With ten to go it was Shuryan looking to the inside of Trinklein and making the ass to take the lead. Wioncek followed two laps later but it was too late to catch Shuryan as he cruised to the win. Behind Wioncek it was Trinklein for third and Dan Lenters turning in a career best performance for fourth. Fifth went to Schaffer followed by Vander Vliet, Putnam, Idema, Justin Claucherty. Series newcomer Ross Focht put in a clean race to finish tenth.

Claiming the MPH Promotions Hard Charger was Joey Shuryan. The Engine Pro Lucky Dog award went to Vance Wilmoth. Rod Morrison settles for the St. Clair Engine Hard Luck award after heavy damage in the main event crash.
